Who Holds the Strong Man?

The same God who taught him how to stand.

A Purposd Original

“Nobody asked the strong man how much he could take. They just kept handing him more.”

“This reflection is for the man who has been everyone’s answer — and finally had a question he couldn’t solve.”

They call me strong. I learned to answer, “I got it.” Even on days when I absolutely did not.
Because I’m the man. The husband. The father. The one everybody watches when life gets harder.
When something breaks— “Call Dad.” When money gets tight— “I’ll figure it out.” When somebody’s scared— “I’m here.” When somebody needs direction— “I’ll find us a way out.”
So I became the answer man. Even when I didn’t have answers. The calm man. Even while fighting my own disasters. The strong man. The dependable man. The— “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it” man.
And somehow… everybody got comfortable handing me weight without ever asking how much I could take.
Bills on the counter. Problems on my phone. Everybody needing something while I’m carrying my own.
A family looking to me to make everything alright. So I learned how to carry the daytime… then collapse inside at night.

He held everything. But who held him?

💼

The Briefcase

Every morning, without question

📄

The Bills

Figured out every month

🎒

The Backpack

Carried their dreams

🤝

Her Hand

Never let go

🚗

The Wheel

Always finding the way

😔

The Weight

Nobody asked how much

🙏

Finally

Empty hands. Open heart.

Because men like me don’t always say, “I’m tired.” We say, “I’m good.”
We don’t always say, “I’m overwhelmed.” We say, “I’ll handle it. I should.”
We don’t always admit when fear has entered the room. We just calculate, strategize, work harder, and hope the pressure moves.
Because somewhere I learned that being a man meant never being weak. So I became fluent in silence and forgot how to speak.
I could tell you what everybody else needed. What made my wife smile. What kept my children dreaming. What bills were due. What needed repair. Who needed encouragement. Who needed me there.
But ask me, “What do YOU need?” And suddenly I didn’t know what to say.
Because I’d spent so much time being everybody’s shelter… I forgot I needed somewhere to stay.
And some days, if I’m being truthful, I wondered: Do they love me? Or do they love what I provide?
If my hands stopped producing, would they still stand by my side?
If the money slowed down… If the answers ran dry… If I finally said, “I don’t know,” instead of manufacturing another reply…
Would I still be the man they admire? Would I still be enough if I simply got tired?
Because being needed can feel a lot like being loved… until you can’t perform.
Then you start wondering if they loved the man or just everything the man had done.
That thought will break something inside you. Quietly.
Because nobody notices the strong man bending when he’s mastered breaking privately.
So I kept going. Kept providing. Kept leading. Kept giving. Kept solving. Kept sacrificing. Kept everybody else living.
Until one night I had a question I couldn’t outrun:

“Who does the strong man go to
when the strong man is done?”

Who gives me answers when I don’t know the way? Who tells me, “Keep going,” when I have nothing left to say?
Who holds the man everybody else runs toward? Who leads the leader when he can’t see the road anymore?
Who provides for the provider? Who guards the protector? Who gives direction to the man everybody expects to be director?
Who catches the strong man when his knees finally hit the floor?
And somewhere in that silence… I heard: “That’s what I’m here for.”
😭
And suddenly I understood. I’d been trying to be for everybody what only God could be for me.
Provider. Protector. Counselor. Peace.
I was trying to carry people God never asked me to carry alone. Trying to make my shoulders a substitute for His throne.
Leadership was never pretending I knew every road. Strength was never measured by how quietly I carried the load.
Being a man didn’t mean I couldn’t bend. It meant knowing where to go when I’d reached my end.
So I prayed differently. Not, “God, make me stronger so nobody sees me fall.” But, “God, teach me to depend on You instead of trying to carry it all.”
Teach me to lead from Your wisdom, not pressure or pride. Teach me that asking for help doesn’t make me less of a guide.
Teach me my family doesn’t need a man who never breaks. They need a man who knows where to turn when everything shakes.
A man who can say, “I don’t know… but I know Who does.”
A man who doesn’t confuse being depended on with being the source of everyone’s love.
Because I’m not the foundation. I’m standing on One. I’m not the light. I’m teaching my family to follow the Son. I’m not the answer. I’m a man being led.
And sometimes the strongest thing a leader can do is bow his head.
So yes… I’ll provide. I’ll protect. I’ll lead. I’ll fight. I’ll stand beside the people I love with everything I’ve got inside.
But I finally learned I don’t have to prove I’m a man by carrying what was crushing me.
Because even the strongest shoulders were never designed for infinity.
So when life gets heavy… When the money gets funny… When the plan disappears… When I don’t know what comes next and I’m wrestling with fear… I know where to go. I know Who is near.
Because the man everybody runs to finally learned where to run when the road isn’t clear.
And maybe that’s what makes a strong man strong.
Not that he never gets weary. Not that he never gets it wrong. Not that he carries everybody while silently falling apart.
But that he knows when the weight gets too heavy… whose hands are strong enough to carry his heart.
So… Who holds the strong man? The same God who taught him how to stand.

The Truth Beneath the Reflection

“Being needed is not the same as being loved. When your value is tied to your performance, you will eventually wonder if the love would survive your exhaustion. The answer is yes — but only when the relationship is rooted in something deeper than what you produce.”

“God never designed a man to be the source. Provider, yes. Leader, yes. Protector, yes. But source? That’s His role. Every man who confuses those two will eventually collapse under the weight of something he was never built to carry.”

“Strength is not silence. The most powerful men in Scripture — David, Solomon, Paul — all had moments of breaking, weeping, and admitting they couldn’t go on alone. That wasn’t weakness. That was the beginning of breakthrough.”

Biblical Truth

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.”

— Matthew 11:28 NIV

Sit With This

  • 1. When is the last time someone asked what YOU needed — and you actually answered honestly?
  • 2. Have you confused being needed with being loved? What would it feel like if you couldn’t provide for a season?
  • 3. What have you been carrying that God never asked you to carry alone?
This space is for your private reflection. Your response will not be submitted or saved.

A Prayer for the Strong Man

God,

I’ve been everyone’s answer for so long I forgot how to have a question.

Forgive me for trying to be the source when You are the source. Forgive me for mistaking silence for strength and collapse for failure.

Teach me to lead from dependence on You, not performance for them. Let the people I love see a man who knows where to turn — not a man who pretends he never breaks.

And when the weight is too heavy, remind me: I don’t have to carry this alone. You’ve been here the whole time.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
