The Journey

For Personal Growth

Dear Journal · Week 3 · Season 1: Healing

I Keep Finding Myself Back Here

I Keep Finding Myself Back Here: original journal editorial cover. A fictional white woman in her late thirties with natural dark curls, olive-toned complexion and a caramel sweater sits on the bottom stair of her apartment hallway, setting her phone face-down instead of responding impulsively.

Dear Journal

I’m starting to realize that some of the things I’ve been asking God to change around me...
He’s been trying to change within me.

I keep saying I want something different.
Different relationships. Different outcomes. Different habits. Different peace. But if I’m honest... sometimes I keep bringing the same version of me into every new situation.

The same reactions. The same coping mechanisms. The same need for approval. The same avoidance. The same anger. The same habit of running back to what’s familiar when life gets uncomfortable.

And maybe that’s why some cycles keep repeating. Not because I’m incapable of changing... but because familiar has felt safer than different. Even when familiar was hurting me.

God, I don’t want to keep calling something “just the way I am” when You’re trying to show me something that needs healing. Show me the patterns I’ve normalized. Show me what triggers them. Show me what I reach for when I’m lonely, rejected, angry, afraid, or overwhelmed.

And when You reveal it... give me the courage not to defend it.

I don’t want to just recognize my patterns. I want to break them.

Biblical Truth

God doesn’t only want to change your circumstances. He wants to transform the patterns that keep recreating them.

Reflection

Some patterns were learned in survival. Some came from wounds. Some were modeled for us. And some developed because they helped us cope.

Understanding where a pattern came from can help us heal it... but it doesn’t mean we have to keep living in it.

God can teach us another way.

Heart Check: Beneath the Surface

  • What situation keeps repeating in my life?
  • What emotion usually triggers my old response?
  • What do I reach for when I’m uncomfortable?
  • What pattern have I been excusing instead of confronting?
  • What is God asking me to do differently the next time the pattern shows up?

Today’s Reminder

You don’t have to keep becoming who your past trained you to be. God is renewing your mind, healing your heart, and teaching you new ways to respond.

Prayer

Father, I’m tired of repeating cycles You’ve been calling me out of. Search my heart and show me what I’ve normalized simply because it’s familiar. Give me wisdom to recognize my triggers before they become reactions.

Heal the wounds beneath my unhealthy patterns. Renew my mind where I’ve believed lies. Strengthen me when the old way feels easier than the new one. And when I stumble, don’t let shame convince me to quit.

Teach me to get back up, return to You, and choose differently. I don’t just want different circumstances, Lord. I want to become different. Heal what needs healing. Correct what needs correcting. Remove what needs removing. And develop in me what was missing. I’m ready to stop repeating what You are trying to redeem. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
