What Did You Do Today?

The Mental Load, Exhaustion & Living on Autopilot

You’ve been busy all day, but somehow your answer is “nothing.” In our first Wine Down conversation, we talk about invisible responsibilities, feeling overlooked, and making room for rest, support, and honest moments with God.

Someone asks, “What did you do today?”

And suddenly you’re mentally going through a list.

You got the kids ready. Answered messages. Worked. Cleaned. Cooked. Handled appointments. Remembered what everyone else forgot. Made sure everybody had what they needed.

And somehow, at the end of the day, you still feel like you didn’t do enough.

But here’s another question.

While you were taking care of everything and everybody, who was taking care of you?

Sometimes exhaustion isn’t just about how much we’re physically doing. It’s about everything we’re mentally and emotionally carrying.

The decisions nobody sees. The worries we don’t mention. The expectations we place on ourselves. The things we’re still trying to heal from while continuing to show up for everyone else.

And because we’ve become so accustomed to functioning under pressure, we don’t always recognize when we’re running on empty.

We call it being responsible. Being strong. Being dependable.

But sometimes, what we’re calling strength is really survival.

When productivity becomes your identity

There’s nothing wrong with working hard, caring for your family, or fulfilling your responsibilities.

The problem begins when your sense of worth becomes attached to how much you accomplish.

You start feeling guilty when you rest. You struggle to sit still. You measure a good day by how much you checked off your list instead of whether you were actually present in your life.

And slowly, you can become so busy managing your responsibilities that you stop paying attention to your own heart.

Biblical Insight — Luke 10:38–42

In Luke 10:38–42, we encounter Martha and Mary.

Martha was occupied with preparing and serving, while Mary sat listening to Jesus. When Martha became frustrated, Jesus drew attention to the worry and distraction surrounding her responsibilities.

The lesson isn’t that serving is wrong or that responsibilities don’t matter.

It’s that even good responsibilities can become distractions when they consume our attention and crowd out what matters most.

Being needed by people is not the same as being spiritually nourished.

Sometimes we become so focused on what needs to be done that we forget to be still long enough to recognize what is happening within us.

God doesn’t measure our value by the length of our to-do list.

What if you asked a different question?

Instead of ending every day asking, “Did I do enough?” try asking:

“Was I present today?”

“Did I pay attention to what I needed?”

“Did I make room for God, or did I give Him whatever was left?”

Rest isn’t something you earn after proving your worth.

And caring for yourself doesn’t mean you’ve stopped caring about others.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is recognize that you’re tired, acknowledge what you’ve been carrying, and give yourself permission to respond differently.

You can be grateful for your life and still admit that you’re exhausted.

Both can be true.

Questions that reveal what your heart has been carrying.

  1. When someone asks what you did today, do you immediately think about what you accomplished rather than how you felt?

  2. What responsibility have you been carrying that nobody realizes is weighing on you?

  3. Do you feel guilty when you’re resting? What do you believe that guilt says about your worth?

  4. Have you become so accustomed to being needed that you’ve forgotten how to recognize your own needs?

  5. What would making room for God and genuine rest look like in your current season?

A Prayer for Tonight

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for carrying me through another day, including the moments when I felt like I had to carry everything myself.

Help me recognize when my responsibilities are becoming distractions and when my desire to do everything is leaving little room for You.

Teach me that my worth is not measured by my productivity, my strength, or how much I accomplish for others.

Give me wisdom to recognize what matters, courage to set healthy boundaries, and peace when it’s time to rest.

Remind me that I can serve others without losing myself in the process.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Try This Tonight

Before you go to bed, put your phone down for five minutes.

Ask yourself three questions: What drained me today? What restored me? What do I need to surrender to God tonight?

Write down your answers without judging them.

You don’t have to solve everything tonight. Start by being honest about what you’re carrying.
