Dear Journal · Week 6 · Season 1: Healing

Dear Journal: The Life I Prayed For Feels Unfamiliar

Where Honesty Meets Healing.

The Life I Prayed For Feels Unfamiliar: original journal editorial cover. A fictional East Asian woman in her late thirties with long layered chestnut hair and a muted plum cotton top folds fresh cream linen in an ordinary living room, pausing with a small uncertain but peaceful smile.

Week 6 · Building a New Normal

Dear Journal,

I used to pray for things to change.

I prayed for peace. I prayed for healing. I prayed for freedom from the cycles I kept repeating.

And now that some things are finally different, I have to admit something.

Sometimes, I don’t know what to do with the peace I asked God for.

I’m so used to having something to worry about that when life gets quiet, I start looking for what’s wrong.

I’m so used to being disappointed that when something good happens, I question how long it will last.

I’m so used to surviving that actually living feels unfamiliar.

And I didn’t expect that part of healing.

I thought once things changed, I would automatically feel different.

But I’m learning that just because God brings you into a new season doesn’t mean every old habit disappears at the door.

Sometimes your circumstances change before your responses do.

Sometimes the door is open, but you’re still standing there because the room on the other side is unfamiliar.

And sometimes you find yourself missing things you know weren’t good for you.

Not because you want the pain back.

But because you knew how to function there.

You knew what to expect. You knew how to protect yourself. You knew who you had to become to survive.

But this new season is asking something different of me.

It’s asking me to stop confusing chaos with connection.

To stop believing that peace means something bad is coming.

To stop returning to situations I’ve already asked God to deliver me from.

And to stop treating healthy things like they’re temporary visitors in my life.

God, I realize now that healing isn’t just about leaving something behind.

It’s also about learning how to live without it.

Learning how to communicate without shutting down.

Learning how to rest without guilt.

Learning how to love without losing myself.

Learning how to make decisions without fear controlling every outcome.

And learning how to be consistent when the excitement of a new beginning wears off.

I’m not going to get everything right.

There will be days when an old thought shows up. Days when an old reaction feels easier. Days when I have to remind myself that familiar doesn’t always mean safe.

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t grown.

It means I’m still learning.

So today, God, I’m not asking You to make this new season feel familiar.

I’m asking You to help me become faithful in it.

Teach me to build habits that support the healing You’ve begun.

Give me the courage to stay when things are healthy instead of running because they’re unfamiliar.

And help me stop looking backward every time moving forward requires something new from me.

I don’t want to spend the rest of my life surviving what You’ve already brought me through.

I want to learn how to live.

Scripture: Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)

Heart Check: What healthy part of my life still feels unfamiliar? Have I been tempted to return to something unhealthy simply because I knew how to function there?

Closing reminder: Sometimes the hardest part of healing isn’t leaving the old life. It’s learning how to live in the new one.

Where honesty meets healing.
