No One Understands Him

Being misunderstood by them doesn’t mean God misunderstands you.

By Chestney Hibbler · 8-minute read · Published August 2026

“You got good at pretending. That’s not strength — that’s survival. And you deserve more than just surviving.”

“This reflection is for the guy in the back of the room who’s carrying more than anyone knows.”

You ever say, “I’m good,” ‘cause explaining feels worse?
Like the thoughts in your head don’t translate into words?
So you throw on your hoodie, put the headphones on loud, ‘cause somehow you feel loneliest when surrounded by a crowd.
They say, “What’s wrong with you?” You say, “Nothing. I’m straight.” But nothing gets heavy when you’re carrying weight.
So you laugh with the guys, drop a joke in the chat, then go home to a mind that ain’t laughing like that.
They call you too quiet. Then mad when you speak. Tell you, “Man up,” then call feelings weak.
So you learned how to hide what you couldn’t explain, turned “I’m hurting inside” into “Bro, I’m just drained.”
You got good at pretending. Made silence your shield. ‘Cause it’s easier looking unbothered than saying what you really feel.
But strength isn’t measured by how little you show, and healing can’t reach what you won’t let God know.
David fought giants, but still wrote through his tears. He poured out his heart— his worries, his fears.
So maybe being strong isn’t acting untouched. Maybe courage sounds like:
“God… this is too much.”

“Maybe courage sounds like: ‘God… this is too much.’”

Because He understands words you don’t know how to say, hears the prayers underneath every “I’m okay.”
When nobody can tell why you’ve been in your head, God knows every thought before it gets said.
So no—
everybody won’t understand you. Some won’t even try. But don’t bury your heart just to keep up the disguise.
You don’t have to crash out to prove that it’s real. You don’t have to go numb just because you can feel.
Take the armor off sometimes. Let somebody trustworthy in. Because becoming a man doesn’t mean hiding within.
And when the world tells you real men never break— remember God builds strength in the pieces we place
in His hands.
So, my guy…
you don’t always have to explain every storm you’ve been through. Being misunderstood by them doesn’t mean God misunderstands you.

“Being misunderstood by them doesn’t mean God misunderstands you.”

Let Him hear what you hide. Let Him grow what you feel. You don’t have to look strong while He’s teaching you to heal.

The Truth Beneath the Reflection

Saying “I’m good” is not always a lie — sometimes it’s armor. But armor was designed for battle, not for every room you walk into. The people closest to you deserve the real version.

David — the warrior, the giant-slayer, the king — wrote Psalms full of tears, confusion, and raw fear. He didn’t perform strength for God. He poured out what was real. That’s what God is asking from you too.

Healing can’t reach what you won’t let God touch. The part you’ve been hiding isn’t too broken, too dark, or too confusing for Him. He already knows. He’s just waiting for you to bring it.

What God Says About You

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

— Psalm 34:18 NIV

Sit With This

These questions are just for you. Write whatever comes to mind — nobody else will see it.

  • 1. What have you been saying “I’m good” about when you actually aren’t?
  • 2. Who in your life could you take the armor off around — even just a little?
  • 3. What is one thing you’ve been carrying alone that you’ve never let God into?
This space is just for you. Nothing you write here is submitted or saved.

A Prayer for the Guy Who’s Been Saying “I’m Good”

God,

I’ve been saying “I’m good” for so long I almost believed it myself. But You know what’s underneath. You know the weight I’ve been pretending isn’t there.

I don’t have to explain it perfectly — You already understand. Give me the courage to stop hiding and start healing. And send me at least one person I can actually be real with.

I want to be strong — but I want the kind of strength that comes from You, not the kind that comes from pretending.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
